What is an Other?

Other firearms explained

Understanding how the ATF defines Others

To understand how the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms classifies an Other, we first have to be clear on how they define each class of firearms.

The ATF defines a Pistol as a firearm that is designed to be fired with one hand, among other things, but this is the most relevant portion.

The ATF defines a rifle as a firearm that is designed to be fired with two hands and shouldered, among other things, but this is the most relevant portion.

An Other firearm is designed typically with a pistol brace, or no brace, but must not have a stock. The absence of the Stock in the design ensures that the firearm is not designed to be shouldered there for cannot be classified as a rifle.

Other firearms are equipped with a vertical fore grip or a pump action grip. This design feature requires the firearm to be fired with two hands; therefore, it cannot be qualified as a Pistol.

The Other firearm must meet these specifications and be at an overall length of more than 26 inches long.

We hope this helps clarify the sometimes confusing rules regarding Others. If you have questions or would like to look into purchasing an Other or any type of firearm, stop by the shop.
